Social City Mastery: Fundamental Principles

There are several principles you will need to get a handle on if you really want to be a Social City expert:

Principle #1: It’s a game.

This might seem obvious, but recognizing that Social City is a game is a crucial step towards awesome results. Like most games, Social City has rules. For instance, everything must be put on a grid square in the game. You probably won’t even have thought about that rule because it’s so implicit in the game. Social City is filled with rules like this that you may or may not have actively recognized.

This is important: Most of these rules bear only a passing resemblance to the real world.

Frequently in real life buildings are put on funny shaped lots, roads curve around neighborhoods and areas of a city aren’t square. Okay, I realize what you’re thinking: Why am I telling you this?

If you play Social City expecting it to work like the real world, you may be let down. Nevertheless, that isn’t all bad.

I don’t know about you, but I certainly don’t earn $100,000 each day – you’ll be able to in Social City. In addition, I am not entrusted with city planning, but I am in Social City. Having this in mind, let’s move on to…

Principle #2: Priorities determine results.

Whether you’re conscious of it or not, your priorities determine your results. Whatever you most want out of a game determines how you play the game. Those who are determined to win no matter what look quite different from those just trying to make friends and enjoy playing. Don’t forget, sometimes this isn’t a conscious decision. You might not know the underlying reason for the way you play the game.

Don’t worry, there’s no correct way to play Social City. Even so you should determine what you want out of the game before you start playing. Or in the much more likely scenario that you’re already playing, take the time to pick your priorities before continuing.

For instance, you might decide you simply want to create an attractive city in which the people are happy. Congratulations! In that case, you don’t need to worry about particular tactics. Just have fun and figure it out as you go along.

Perhaps you want to get to a high level rapidly or have more people in your city than a handful of your friends. That’s awesome, too. However, you’ll need to develop a system that helps you maximize your efforts in order to make that happen.

Either way, the articles on this blog will help you achieve your goals.

That leads us to…

Principle #3: Have a goal.

It is my opinion that virtually anything in life is more rewarding when you’ve got a goal.

Games are activities focused on fun and most of them have goals: Halo – shoot the aliens and stay alive; Monopoly – bankrupt other people by charging them more and more money; Harry Potter video games – wave your wand properly to cast the spells to progress through the storyline; You get the idea. Games have goals – that’s the way you know when you succeed.

Social City is a different style of game, however. Growing your city appears to be the goal, but exactly how do you know if you’re finished? To make the game more satisfying, I propose adding goals for yourself.

Your goal could be to have a specific number of people in your city, to achieve a particular level, to reproduce your favorite real world city in the virtual world of Social City or something else .

Here’s my example: My goal is to reach Level 40 in 30 days of playing Social City. In addition, I want to spend only one hour each day to get it done. That’s right, I’m planning to be working away at my goal alongside you!

Anyway, no matter what your goal is, the point is just to have one. After that it is possible to focus on what it takes to make your goal happen and enjoy the thrill of achieving it.

Recap (or the super-fast version)

Here’s a brief summary to help you remember these ideas:

  • Principle #1: It’s a game – Social City doesn’t keep to the rules of the real world. Learn the Social City rules and play by them. (Don’t worry, I’ll help.)
  • Principle #2: Priorities determine results – Sort out your priorities so you can focus on achieving them without distraction.
  • Principle #3: Have a goal – Turn those priorities into specific goals to make your game play more satisfying.
